This was not a typical Elite Horticulture landscaping design project in North Bend and was our first time building a custom outdoor room. The pre-existing outdoor space was just a basic aggregate uncovered patio that sloped off to the back fence, leaving limited usable patio space.
We removed the concrete patio and started from scratch. The first step in the process was setting the 6”x6” pressure treated posts required for our outdoor room structure. The posts were buried 3’ deep and set in poured concrete reinforced with rebar. To deal with the slope of the backyard we built a retaining wall around the perimeter of the patio space using Belgard Bel Air 2.0 retaining wall block. To make the space more intimate we built a seating wall on top of the retaining wall that also encompasses the entire patio space using the same Belgard product, but in the freestanding wall block line.
Columns were built around each post and capped. The patio was built using the Belgard Urbana 3-pice paver system with a dark charcoal border to match the column caps. The main focal point of the patio space is the fireplace. It is a prefabricated unit from Belgard in the Brighton line. There is an option for either natural gas or wood-burning, this unit was set up for wood burning. It was set on a poured concrete slab.
The outdoor room was built using four 6”x12” Douglas fir beams with 4”x6” Douglas fir roof joists. The beams are attached to the posts using a black powder-coated Simpson bracket that really adds a nice accent to the structure. The roof was constructed using 1”x6” tongue and groove Douglas fir boards. Electrical was run to the outdoor room to power two outdoor heaters hung in the eaves, as well as an impressive chandelier. It is an unbelievable space that will no doubt attract many visitors for years to come!
For the side yard, we created 3 separate planter boxes from the same material as the retaining wall. We also installed a small bluestone walking path that leads to a 3-column water feature to mute the noise of traffic from the nearby street. The planting space is slightly limited but we were able to add just enough to balance out the size of the outdoor room.
This was a great project for Elite Horticulture and we hope to build more outdoor rooms in the near future!
