This is another design/build project that we finished up in The River Glen community in North Bend. Our clients had a blank slate to start with. A very basic planting scheme in the front of the house and only a lawn in the back. They wanted to build a space that they could enjoy with their family while creating privacy from the neighboring homes. They had a deck built by a different contractor but left the rest of the landscape design up to us. We wanted to increase the amount of seating area they had so we installed a 12′ by 15′ patio constructed out of Belgard Plaza 2 by 2 Charcoal pavers. There is also a walkway made of the same material that leads from the front driveway to the back patio. The main concern our clients had was creating privacy from the neighboring homes. We built three 12′ long cedar trellis and installed them along the back fence to screen out the back neighbor’s windows. Next summer we will install some kind of clematis or hop to grow up over the trellis. Also along the back fence, we installed three large flowering Pear trees, two Siberian Spruce, and a Japanese Bloodgood Maple. We also installed dark basalt boulders and about 15 yards of soil to raise the planter bed along the back fence to give the trees some extra height. Once these are mature you will never know there is a house behind them. The side yard was a little more simple to screen out. We installed a trellis at the neighboring home earlier in the year so we just installed 8′ tall Arborvitae along the deck to break up the fence and trellis with some color. We tried to keep the planting scheme low maintenance with room for our clients to experiment with plants of their own choosing. We always try to get at least one edible plant in our designs, we went with Blueberry here which should keep the grandchildren happy. In the front of the house, we installed two small retaining walls to build raised beds and give the front of the house some clean formal lines. Rhododendron for spring color and Nandina for year-round color. Our client really wanted to have two “Christmas Trees” in front of the house to hang lights on. We were able to go to Crown Tree Farm in North Bend and transplant two Fir. It was a great project and hopefully, our clients get everything out of it that they wanted!
